Murat Artu was born in 1954 in Karşıyaka, İzmir, and lived there until completing high school. He moved to Ankara for university education in 1973 and graduated from the Middle East Technical University (METU) Architecture Department in 1978. He completed his master's degree in 1981 with a thesis on 'University Campus Planning'. After working in various architecture offices, he began his freelance architecture activities in 1981. He has worked on numerous projects in Turkey and abroad, including residential sites, office buildings, and hotels, providing architectural services as well as construction consultancy. He continued his professional activities in Bodrum from 2010 onwards, focusing on selected projects. Throughout his career, he won various awards in competitions and served on juries. He was a board member of the Chamber of Architects and served as president of the Turkish Association of Free Architects from 2004 to 2006. He contributed voluntarily to civil society struggles regarding urban development and environmental issues. Murat Artu passed away on September 11 after a battle with cancer lasting over 2.5 years.
